Common Garden Weeds

As the most common garden weeds, dandelions cause a great deal of damage to garden plants as well as the gardener's pocket book. Dandelions are also very a nuisance to an average gardener while they are still edible.

Dandelions are extremely difficult to eliminate from a garden because of their rapid growth and ability to spread easily. These weeds are also quite edible and when young can really look really nice. However, when mature they compete with essential nutrients for your plants and will stunt their growth. Also these weeds spread very quickly and can easily cover an entire garden within a few months.

If you don't want to go through the effort of getting rid of dandelions from your garden you can at least try to control their growth by using some natural methods. There are many tips out there on how to control these common garden weeds but before we get into those let's take a look at what is the first weed that you should try to eliminate from your garden.

The Most common garden weeds that you should try to get rid of are most of the perennial weeds like dandelions, cabbage, rye grass and other green plants. You may not think that a vegetable can be considered to be a perennial, but it can. Most vegetable plants are perennials but there are some exceptions like cucumbers and some annuals. Anytime you have a vegetable plant that needs maintenance you can consider pruning it to make sure that the root system remains intact.

Another way that you can control the growth of most common garden weeds is by cutting them back on the plants themselves. You will find that if you use chemicals to kill them that the plants will grow back. This is why some people choose to grow vegetables using non-chemical methods. This does have its disadvantages though because often it takes several years before the new growth is visible.

Some herbs that can be very effective in controlling common garden weeds are marigolds, thyme and chives, but as with any plant that can be used it will be best to consult your local garden center and see what they suggest. Just remember that the herb will take time to grow so don't start with too many.

Other than the methods mentioned above you can also get rid of some garden weeds by taking advantage of the compost that you have in your garden. If you have a compost pile, there are several methods that you can use to get rid of unwanted plants. One of the more common ways is to use a shovel and dig down into the soil to loosen it and then throw away the roots or shoot the roots into another compost container.

Another efficient method is by mixing a little bleach with water and sprinkling it over the soil so that it will kill any plants. This is also a good idea if you have a lot of grass in your garden because it will cut off the roots and kill the grass. The last tip that I will give you is that it is always a good idea to check around your home for other weeds that are growing and trim them out so that you can use the space that they occupy.
